Tim Brennan is currently AHRB Fellow at the University of Sunderland. 'Vinylarium' is part of Performing Northumbria, a three year project combining debate and journeying as art to investigate the identity of politics of Sunderland within the former geography of Northumbria (from Humber to Forth). The project proposes new forms of art practice and research as live processes in public.
The exhibition involves a temporary library of vinyl records as donated by the people of Sunderland. Vinyl recordings have a special capacity to bring out memories, recall personal history and spark conversations in a way that CDs and MP3 players simply can't or don't do yet. The project deploys the simplest of means to articulate complex ideas of property, leisure, regional identity and art. Curating runs through all aspects of the work - it involves different kinds of curating from those of the Vardy Gallery, artist (selecting the record owners, categorizing/systematising the Vinyl), the participants (selecting an album), the gallery visitor, (selecting and DJing a record).
